Pick a DVD Player / Recorder

When buying or building a computer, one of the easier choices you'll have to make is picking a DVD recorder (yes, recorder). They are relatively inexpensive, each new generation offer more performance at a lower cost, and they're so versatile these days.

If you're going to be watching high-def (HD) movies on your PC, you'll want a Blu-Ray DVD player because HD-DVD seems to be DOA.

However, many of us don't really care to watch an HD movie on a relatively small screen (even if it's considered a large laptop screen); that said, you'll still want a capable DVD recorder, in addition to its player capabilities (all recorders can play back DVDs, by the way).

Note that HD DVD Recorders can cost upwards of $200, whereas Dual Layer (can record on both sides) DVD recorders cost under $50.

So, the choice is easy: Pick the top-spec device for very little money.
